Aikido Terminology

  • Aikidoka � a person, who practises Aikido,
  • Uke  � your partner (attacker),
  • Jo � wooden staff, used for attack and kata's 
  • Bokken � a wooden sword, used for attack and kata's
  • Tanto � a wooden knife, or blunt metal knife (designed to be as realistic and safe for training purposes).
  • Dojo � a place of learning/training,
  • Sensei � a teacher commonly used in martial arts to address the instructor.
  • Dan � black belt rank (1st and so on).
  • Hakama � a pleated divided skirt, worn by black belts,and optional for women at all ranks.
  • Gi � the training uniform,
  • Ki � the spirit / internal energy,
  • Kyu � lower grade belts,
  • Seiza � the traditional sitting position on the knees
  • Katate kosa dori- one hand holding opposite side 
  • Katate tori- holding same side 
  • Kata dori menuchi- holding one side at shoulder with strike to face or head 
  • Muna dori menuchi- holding center of chest with strike to face or head 
  • Shomenuchi- strike down towards top of head 
  • Yokomen nuchi- side strike to the neck 
  • Munatsuki- strike to the abdomen area 
  • Katate tori ryotemuchi- double handed hold
